ONE DAY TRIPS

OREGON, SOUTHERN WASHINGTON, NORTHERN CALIFORNIA

TRIPS EVERY DAY -- From 1 hour to 6 hours in length

1-800-289-4534

Choose from mild ... Or wild! For conventions in Lane County, visitors in the Portland/Vancouver area, tourists staying at Central Oregon resorts near Bend and Sunriver, families driving on Interstate 5 -- We run trips throughout the state to meet your adventure criteria.

Here are the rivers we do, divided by how challenging they are, and the major cities and highways within reach of each float:

Class I+, Really easy
Willamette River I-5: Eugene/Springfield (right in town!), $49. See nesting bald eagles! We see them on 98% of our full-day trips on the Willamette. Trips depart from Valley River Center, right behind Valley River Inn. We also do shorter trips from Island Park to Valley River Center.

Lower McKenzie I-5: $49. We float Springfield's backyard river to see eagles and osprey ("fishing hawks"), great blue heron and waterfowl. Great for family reunions at Armitage Park, or any other groups!

Class II-II+, Mild
McKenzie River, Highway 126. 30 minutes from Eugene/Springfield (69 miles from Bend), $59. Run the infamous Brown's Hole, Martin's Rapid, and many others! A great introduction to whitewater for the novice, also wonderful fun for the gung-ho rafter (our guides will show you how to surf a raft, if you dare!). 14 miles, just under 4 hours float time, with time for lunch. Meets near Vida, east of Springfield.

North Santiam River, Highway 22. 30 minutes from Salem, our state capitol, or a bit longer from Portland, $65. Run Spencer's Hole, the Swirlies, Carnivore, Mill City Falls. Nice forested canyon, blue waters.

Rogue River, right off Interstate 5, close to Grants Pass, Medford, and Ashland, $75. Float the famous "Hellsgate" section where parts of The River Wild and How the West was Won were filmed! This is a good float for families with younger children, since the water is warm. Or paddle yourself in one of our exciting inflatable kayaks, for more challenge.

Class III, Medium
Upper McKenzie, off Highway 126, 45 miles from Sisters (58 miles from Bend), $65. Beautiful old-growth Douglas fir trees, lush mosses, crystal clear waters, turquoise tinted pools, whitewater frothing like champagne bubbles -- this is classic Oregon scenery. The morning run is busy water, lots of rock dodging, fun and exciting. The scenery is breathtaking! Rapids are bigger with less speed during the afternoon. Located near McKenzie Bridge.

North Umpqua, off Highway 138, out of Roseburg, 45 minutes from Crater Lake National Park, 125 miles to Bend, $79. Oregon's best one-day trip for the adventure seeker who wants rock dodging (why else is there a rapid named Pinball?), hydraulics (Toilet Bowl, Headknockers), wave trains and a generally wet good time. Fantastic basalt rock formations, clear waters, more old growth forest. Come in the off-season, November to May, for BIG water (yes, we have wetsuits and paddle jackets).

Deschutes River, off Highway 197, in Central Oregon (90 minutes from Bend/Portland), $75 ($79 weekends). So you want big waves even in August? Come to the Deschutes (pronounced Dess - shoots), a French word meaning "River of the Falls." Hot and dry, even when Portland and Salem are getting rained on! Run classic drops such as Elevator, Oak Springs, Boxcar, and Cape Canaveral (get launched into orbit!). Have your photo taken in the rapids by a professional, see the proofs at day's end before you order! We serve all local resorts for Deschutes adventurers. Our van shuttles include a stop at awesome Sherars Falls (not runnable if you are sane!); ride from Bend with us, and we'll show you the spectacular Crooked River Gorge.

Upper Rogue, off Interstate 5, near Medford, $75. We run out of Gold Hill for a half day, or repeat the run for a full day. Several big drops show you the power of moving water! This isn't called the Powerhouse run for nothing.

Class V+, Wild
Upper Klamath, off Highway 66, near Ashland and Klamath Falls (148 miles from Bend), $125. Get Ambushed and Bushwhacked! Run 50 rapids rated Class II to Class V in just 17 miles of river! This run is called Hells Corner Gorge, for good reason! You can get there from Bend in about 2.5 hours, or coming from Portland, arrive the night before and rest up -- you will be paddling like a demon the next day. A real whitewater thrill rush for the veteran rafter, or a dramatic introduction to wild and crazy rapids for the beginner with a strong sense of adventure.

Klickitat River, off Interstate 80, in the Columbia Gorge (Hood River), $110 (May-June only). In spring, this is an intense run. The rapids are rated as Class III, but big water and a steep gradient combine to create a unique thrill ride. The first two hours are NON-STOP action, enough to satisfy the most demanding whitewater enthusiast. The scenery, as it screams past your vision, is incredible. This is glacial melt-off and our wetsuits are necessary.

Option 1: Close-in adventures, comfy camp or resort overnighting.
(Road access into some or all of the river area.)

North Umpqua. Our guides fight to work this trip -- it's the best 2-day trip in Oregon. The NU has it all: great rapids, beautiful scenery, and lots of touristy things nearby (Crater Lake National Park, Wildlife Safari). This is old-growth Douglas fir forest, trademark Oregon scenery. Waters are clear and a spectacular blue at summer levels, or come in the off-season for a high water super-thrill ride. There are some stunning basalt formations, such as Old Man Rock, Eagle Rock, Lichen Life Cliff. You see fewer people than on some rivers (commercial rafting is limited to 2300 people from mid-May into September). Fishing is wonderful -- Zane Grey and Hemingway's son fished here! Stay at a luxury resort, a bed and breakfast, or at a forest camp. Run the "appliance rapids" -- such as Toilet Bowl, Bathtub, Kitchen Sink, Lunch Counter; plus the Pinball, Son of Toilet Bowl, Frogger, Headknockers and many more! (Note: As a courtesy to anglers, we avoid the busy Steamboat area from July 15 onward; if you want to run the entire stretch, come earlier.)

Deschutes. Our Double Trouble run is nestled in Maupin (rhymes with "popping") at the bottom of the volcanic Deschutes Canyon. Stay at riverside lodges (maybe even in a tepee) or camp along the river with us, then run 2 dozen or more rapids. We repeat a 14-mile stretch of "fun hog" water -- BIG waves, bodysurfing, waterfighting -- on this "miracle in the desert." Weather is hot and dry, the river is sky blue or emerald green, and the riparian zone is a lush green. You know there's a good ride when the rapids are named upper and lower Elevator (5th Floor, Snorkels!), Surf City, and Cape Canaveral (Think only the space shuttle goes into orbit? Wrong!). But watch out for the nice-named ones, Boxcar and Oak Springs! (Warning -- summer weekends are very busy -- you will get into a LOT of crazy waterfights. Also, we have limited guest days for summer weekends, so you'd better call early!) This is also a great 1-day trip from Kah-Nee-Ta Resort. Find out why everyone is "hoppin' and boppin' in Maupin!"

Upper Klamath. Can you run 100 rapids in a weekend? You can on the Upper Klamath. From beginner, Class II, to sheer terror, Class V, the Upper Klamath will give you a rush such as no other river can. Great water levels all summer long, and it's warm water (well, warm for Oregon, anyway). Touristy stuff includes Ashland Shakespeare Festival. Stay at camps, hidden lodges, or in luxury inns. You run two times on Class V rapids Caldera and Hell's Corner, plus get Ambushed and Bushwhacked, lost in the Bermuda Triangle, butt-stamped in Branding Iron, commit mutiny in Captain Jack, pray for your life in Satan's Gate!

Lower Klamath. Not ready for a near-death experience just yet? Try the Lower Klamath. This Northern California gem offers plenty of fun runs such as Dragon's Tooth, Sasquatch Squeeze, Devil's Toe-Nail. The water temperature is 70 degrees in summer, so you'll spend some time floating alongside the raft in your life jacket. Great for large groups on weekends or anytime. Located near Yreka, CA, close to the border.

McKenzie. Run our backyard river and discover a secret world of lush forests with moss-draped "vine maples" and old growth Douglas fir trees, crystal clear waters packed with trout and summer steelhead, osprey winging overhead, deer along the shoreline. Run infamous hydraulics such as Brown's Hole, Martin's Rapid and The Vortex. Camping makes this our lowest-priced overnighter for Scout troups and other groups; or stay at luxurious resorts such as the Cedarwood, Log Cabin Inn, Eagle Rock Resort.

Option 2: Real wilderness adventures in not much time.
(Limited access, float-in-only camping.)

Lower Deschutes. Escape the crowds and raft the lower Deschutes. We drive to Mack's Canyon and float a day of moderate rapids, then finish on Day 2 with a bang! as we run five big rapids, including Washout, the rapid of the 90s (it wasn't there before then!), where even the big rafts can flip. We've also flipped at Colorado Rapid, so you're in for a wild ride (or we can cheat the edge, if you want to get just a little vertical).

Upper run: From Warm Springs or Trout Creek, we cover over 40 miles to Maupin. This is a lot of river for 2 days, but a very full and satisfying trip, which includes the classic Whitehorse Rapid (several hundred yards of chills and thrills!), bodysurfing at Buckskin Mary, and all the traditional trimmings of a whitewater adventure, including water fights!

Wild & Scenic Rogue. This is Oregon's most renowned whitewater stream, featured in movies such as "The River Wild" and "How the West was Won." The Rogue has a long and well-deserved reputation as a wild run, but with a guide in control, it's safe excitement even for families. Warm water, wonderful wildlife (otters, black bear, eagles), notorious rapids (Blossom Bar, The Jaws, Coffee Pot, Grave Creek Falls), a spectacular canyon and pretty campsites make the Rogue a premier overnighter. You need to schedule a Rogue 2-day early in the season, otherwise you'll be on the river from dawn to dusk trying to make time, and that's no fun. We do them only from Nov. 15 to June 15, with April and May the best time for higher waters with better weather. Wilderness lodge options make a winter trip very feasible (and we have wetsuits, paddle jackets, fleece tops and other comfy stuff to better enjoy those big waves).

Grande Ronde. This pretty stream is fast-moving with lots of whitewater, but it's all moderate, excellent for beginners or family groups. We float through one of the deepest river canyons in the nation for two busy days from Minam to Powwatka. Run Martin's Misery, House Rock, Blind Falls and many others. It's a great forested escape from the Tri-Cities area in Washington, or fun for tourists visiting Oregon's forgotten corner (Experience Chief Joseph Days, Wallowa Mountains--"Oregon's Swiss Alps"-- Hell's Canyon.) We run from spring into mid-June only, depending on snowpack. (We switch to 3 days for summer trips, because whitewater should be fun, not exhausting. After all, you're on VACATION.)

That's the basic run-down on what you can do in two days. Some trips do require minimum group sizes to reserve, others can accept bookings from couples or singles. Bear in mind that group sizes range from a limit of 12 (some Rogue trips) to 30 (Upper Klamath) to unlimited (McKenzie). A group of around 18 to 24 is nice for a big organization, and on some rivers, you need to break a large group into smaller ones. Prices vary, according to the river, how many people are going, what time of year, where you stay overnight (we can book most lodges and inns for you), how remote the river is (if we can't drive the gear, and must boat it all in, this requires additional, well-trained cargo raft guides), how much service you want (we occasionally do rent-a-guide services for groups such as Scouts who want a more hands-on trip but don't have the rafts, gear trailers or knowledge of rapids that we do). Most of our trips are true vacations with the guides doing much of the work, while you get to be the fun hogs. Any questions? Call us today!
